Radio Streaming Broadcast: October 14, 2010. Part 3 of 4 in Series

Barbara Marx-Hubbard

Buckminster Fuller has called Barbara Marx Hubbard “the best informed human now alive regarding futurism and the foresights it has produced.” Widely regarded as his philosophical heir, Barbara is a social innovator, speaker, author, educator and leader in the new worldview of conscious evolution.

In 1945, when she was 15 years old, the first atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. This terrible act prompted Barbara to ask the fundamental question:  “What is the meaning of our new power that can be used for the good?  And “What are positive images of the future equal to these new powers?” This defining moment propelled her on her life’s quest to find answers to these questions. The insights she has gained has led to her definitive message of hope that “Our crisis is a birth” of a more universal human and universal humanity.

Melanie’s life-long dedication to social justice, hands on international policy research and private sector entrepreneurship fuel her passionate dedication to multi-sector collaboration, and functional vision of The Global SummitAt 20, she began advancing theories linking population, environmental scarcity and poverty, advocating multi-sector collaboration and community empowerment. Inspired by research and related programs in Africa, she founded Empowerment Works (EW) in 2001. Her training in transformational mediation and international negotiations further contributed to EW’s "7 Stages to Sustainability" approach to Asset Based Community Development. Melanie recently taught and launched the 7 Stages to Sustainability curriculum (Fall 2009) to 90+ young women leaders in China for the World Academy for the Future of Women. Melanie's speaking highlights include the 2006 International AIDS Conference in Toronto as co-Founder of the Coalition for a Sustainable Africa; unveiling her Population Theory at the 2004 Sustainable Resources Conference in Boulder; and Co-Chairing the 5th International Symposium on Digital Earth.

In April 2007, Melanie produced the first national press-conference on Colony Collapse Disorder, "Bees, Bio diversity and Food Security" which brought world renowned expert insights on sustainable agriculture, critical food security and bio-diversity to the mainstream media via immediate coverage in the LA Times and Live on NBC.

In concert with building Empowerment Works, Melanie is the Founder/CEO of BioNova™ Medical Corporation, for which she authored patents for HIV/AIDS and managed research with City of Hope and UCLA AIDS Institute.

A major inspiration, Melanie's late father, Edward Halimi was an inventor of multiple environmental technologies. Seeing his challenges, she realized the need for mass collaboration and public involvement in taking break-through solutions to scale.

Melanie holds a Masters degree of Public Administration in International Management from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and BA in International Relations & Diplomacy from Schiller International University in Madrid, Spain. A global citizen at heart, Melanie speaks French and Spanish and has lived and conducted research throughout Asia, Europe, Africa and Central America. Melanie lives in Venice, CA.

The Global Summit

THE GLOBAL SUMMIT is.

Far more than an event, The Global Summit delivers a whole system approach to address humanity’s most critical challenges from the ground up.

Objectives:

1. Create the world's first global citizen voting platform.

2. Achieve the 8 Millennium Development Goals & The Earth Charter.

3. Catalyze immediate climate change solutions & sustainable development.

Mission:
The Global Summit™ (TGS) is much more than an event. It is the catalyst for year-round collaboration of citizens, businesses and organizations working together to co-create a sustainable future.

Applying advances in communications to empower new voices to be heard, The Global Summit unites the most powerful and grass-roots change makers to co-create hands-on solutions, catalyze local action, share what works best and disseminate the most effective sustainable technologies on earth.

The Global Summit is a 100% for-impact initiative with all proceeds supporting locally-led, sustainable development programs and education.

It was launched Nov. 16-18, 2008 in San Francisco as a 3 day planning symposium produced by Empowerment WORKS and a growing global network of Partners in Empowerment (PIE).

Promoting best practices in locally-led sustainable development, The Global Summit serves to unify and train global Partners in Empowerment (PIE) in the 7 Stages to Sustainability educational framework.

Forming a synergistic philanthropic partnership, The Global Summit "Synergy Fund" further incentivises global participation in '7 Stages to Sustainability'. Registrants of The Global Summit and online students of '7 Stages to Sustainability' trainings will be eligible for Synergy Grants. By advancing a common language for collaboration, the Synergy Fund reduces duplication and increases collective impact. To build critical mass, all donors are invited to align with Synergy Fund criteria.
